Sauder Beginnings TV Stand - Cinnamon Cherry - 35.4 in. Review

These shelves are very inexpensive and are very poorly made. The photo makes them appear sturdy which is not the case. The back of the shelves is a thin sheet of cardboard which arrives folded to fit in the shipping box. The "cherry" appearance is a very thin veneer which chips very easily. I had purchased Sauder items many years ago and the quality was much better then. Very, very disappointed with the very poor quality of this item. I wish I had spent more money and gotten a better made item.

Purchased this for my custom fire pit. The quality is very good (had over a year and no signs of deterioration). It has a strong elastic band that ensures it does not fly off in any kind of wing. The tan color I ordered hides dirt and helps it blend into the deck when not in use.

I place a board to cover the pit opening underneath the cover. This prevents any rain water from pooling on the pit cover.

I spent more time researching the mount for my grandparents TV than I did the TV itself (Sony BRAVIA Z Series KDL-46Z5100 46-Inch 1080p 240Hz LCD HDTV). They had a 39 inch wide TV nook next to their fireplace, and we wanted the Sony to fit snug in front. I built a brace that goes across the nook about 9 inches from the front of it, using 2x6s attached to studs on the sides, and 2 2x4s spanning across and notched into the 2x6s. I attached this wall mount to the 2x4s, just as if there were a real wall back there.

This is a very solidly built mount. The Sony is 45 pounds, and it does not sag a bit with the arms extended all the way forward. The dual arm lets you adjust position laterally, forward and back, and some rotation side to side. Adjusting the tilt is easiest if you take the TV off the mount. A reasonably strong guy should be able to handle a 50 or 60 pound TV without assistance. The Sony, for example, is easy to grab. By contrast, my older XBR3 was awkward to grab.

I am giving this mount 5 stars despite one of the bottom screws being installed cross-threaded. A trip to the hardware store and 60 cents solved that. Installing a mount is pretty straight-forward. Find studs to bolt it into. Make sure it's level. Blah blah. The instructions have good hieroglyphics, but the English is laughable. The screws and stuff are separated nicely into little plastic pockets labeled with letters, making it simple to follow the pictures and put it together.

Tip (1): When I got my brace built, mount attached, and TV up on the mount -- a couple hours work -- the 46" set was slightly but noticeable off-level. Well, actually, it was pretty level, but the fireplace mantel wasn't quite level and had some lines near the TV that made it look slightly off. I used a piece of felt under the left-top hanger to even things out. So don't sweat it if you come out a little off, you can adjust that easily and cheaply.

Tip (2): I'd bet with a heavier TV, it would be easy to adjust the mount by pulling it in and out all the time, because you'd have some weight helping you. With a 50 pound TV, the mount doesn't move at the touch of a finger. This kind of mount works best to put the TV into a position you'd like it to be in (mostly) permanently. If you're just getting started with your research, solid is way more desirable than super-flexible, and this mount does solid very well.

Poundex F4706 TV Stand Review

This is a really nice TV stand and the price on Amazon can't be beat. I don't like plastic wood-like photocopied finishes, so I was very pleased to find this furniture has a combination of wood veneer on the top surfaces and solid wood edges. The stain is evenly applied and all surfaces have a high quality satin finish. The drawer glide hardware is very smooth and all of the stand's mating surfaces fit together with surprising precision.

Like many folks, buying furniture online sight unseen seems unusual. Also, assembling this stuff can be a bit of a chore. However, this Poundex TV stand arrived promptly and was very carefully packed to survive in-transit abuse. Once finally assembled, we now have a very sturdy and attractive wood TV stand at a bargain price. It's a beautiful piece and you could never tell it was a DIY project.

As to assembly, build-it-yourself furniture is probably not for everybody. In my opinion, to get satisfactory results one must be quite handy. This is my fourth recent purchase of furniture-in-a-box. On this TV stand, I used Elmer's wood glue on all wood-to-wood joints for a solid structure that won't wobble and for drawer bottoms that won't rattle. A damp sponge cleans up any glue seepage before it dries. With a few extra assembly touches and some patience, most handy folks should be able to get excellent results putting together this TV stand.
